A Message for today

Christ also suffered for us … who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree. 1 Peter 2:21,24.

Our hearts are always deeply touched when we contemplate what our Lord and Savior suffered on our behalf on the cross of Calvary. Even if we can never grasp all that He went through, we must wonder at the way He endured all that came upon Him there, until He cried out, “It is finished!”

For all the gratitude and worship that arise from our hearts when we consider Him during those hours, let us never forget that there He bore our sins and was judged by God in all His holiness and righteousness.

The atonement for our sins was a work that He alone could accomplish. Neither angel nor man was in a position to do so. Nor could our sins be removed by any authoritative word from the Creator. The Savior had to take them upon Himself and die for them on the cross.

Jesus Christ did not die for an idea or a dogma: He gave His life for our sins. Every single wicked deed or evil thought, every harmful word of ours lay on the Sin-bearer there. What sufferings they brought upon Him who did no sin, in whom there is no sin, and who knew no sin!

The Lord Jesus bore our sins in His body on the tree. This means that He could only accomplish this work for sinners as a Man. For this reason He became Man – so that He could die for our sins. May His portion for such grace and mercy be praise and thanksgiving eternally!

Statement of faith

The Evangelical Baptist Church accepts the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, without the Filioque clause of the Western Church, as a concise, but complete, statement of the main tenets of Christianity, and as derived from the Holy Scriptures. Every other Statement of Faith and Practice is only a further development and interpretation of these tenets, or a reference to particular subjects, which could not be included in a Creed as synoptic as this.
